As I was doing some family history research on Ancestry.com and came across my 5th Great Grandfather. Philip Cornelious Hayes. There was something about the name that interested me. I began to look more into him and the more I found the more interested I became.

He was born in Nauvoo, Ill. in 1833 to his parents Gaylord Hayes and Mary Goodrich Hayes. In 1858 Philip was only 25 years old Abraham Lincoln began debating and came through Nauvoo. Philip saw the future President of the United States up close.

As the American Civil War began in 1860-61 Philip Hayes joined and fought with the North. Pictured above is an example of some of the weapons of those days. I am thankful that the North won and proud to have an ancestor who fought with Abraham Lincoln.
